So here is my first blog post. I am officially overwhelmed by the amount of information and new stuff that exists in the geek world I thought I was familiar with. (It is a myth that ending sentences with prepositions is grammatically incorrect.) Who knows what I’m supposed to be writing about here? I guess a recent interest is the movie “The Secret.” Basic premise, if you’ve yet to see it, is that thoughts send out signals to the universe that attract things similar to the thought. An interesting idea if you ask me and something I observe often in reality. For example, working at Best Buy (a difficult confession) I deal with around a hundred customers in a day, each one involving a very similar set of interactions. I notice that I can use the exact same words during two interactions and receive extremely dissimilar results. One might argue that these results vary with the personality of the customer, which likely has something to do with it. The greater correlation, however, that I have observed (however unscientifically) is between the feeling I put behind the statement and the customer’s reaction. It feels as if I can say something verbally and say something entirely separate emotionally. In a way it’s sorta classic actually. We always hear that we communicate 90% nonverbally and so on. The thing that never gets emphasized, though, is that our nonverbal communications are vastly more powerful than the verbal. In fact, there have been sales in which I have said something that outwardly communicates “DO NOT BUY THIS” while feeling the opposite and been shocked by the customer’s positive response. Of course, it’s very difficult to control the near-unconscious signals beneath the words, especially if I’m in a particularly bad mood, but it does feel possible. Now “The Secret” goes on to a much larger assertion that our thoughts not only communicate powerful messages to other human beings but actually shape reality. I am willing (due most likely to the tempting idea of being capable of changing my universe with a mere thought) to entertain the concept, so I am beginning to follow the instructions from the video as well as researching into the concept a little more. Updates will be given. Cool. First blog post ever. I am so hip.
